Dear Reader,
This past weekend, I went to a chalet in Stoneham with friends and it was pretty rad. Now, it's back to work and it feels dreadful especially since I'm sick.
Definitely not the start I wanted for 2020, but what can you do ! There are lots of memes going around about how in 1820 and 1920 there were massive plague outbreaks and now we're 2020... and I'm sick... and so are lots of people at work... coincidence? 🤔
I know this is stupid because I probably say it every new year, but I feel like this year is going to be a good ass mofoyear. LET'S GET ITTT.
In elementary school, one of my favorite phys ed games was Ballon Diamant. The game was fairly simple. You had one team who tried to steal the diamond (bandits) and the other team who tried to catch the bandits (cops). I freaking loved this game. Why? Simply because I was good at it. Okay, not to tout my own horn, but good is even an understatement. I was a freaking beast at it.
Another reason why I loved this game was because I was always chosen first or second by the team captains. It was a simple logical decision for the captains: Nick is a beast at this game, I want my team to win so I need Nick on my team. And it was the most pure exchange of acknowledgment. I knew I was good, they knew I was good and so I was rewarded accordingly (by getting chosen 1st or 2nd).
It wasn't always like this though. In fact, the first game we played, I most certainly did NOT get chosen first, nor second, nor third, nor fourth nor fifth. I was probably chosen somewhere in the middle after all the tall and athletic guys were chosen. And don't get me wrong, I was still 100% confident in my speed and that I was one of the top guys in my class. I just didn't get chosen in the top picks like I should have.... until we actually played the game and people saw how fast I was. After that first game, I was always a top 5 pick no matter what team I was playing on and who the captains were.
So, what's the difference between my first and second game? It wasn't my mindset. I knew how good I was. The difference was that they didn't know how good I was until I proved it to them by being useful to my team.
And this is what's been bothering me the most recently. I have the utmost belief that given the opportunity, I'd be good at almost any job you give me or at least, I'd be able to learn it quick enough to get decently good at it. The problem is that no one knows this besides me (and maybe Alex too...).
This issue had me extremely frustrated because it wasn't allowing me to go where I wanted to go as quickly as I wanted. In my mind, I was just screaming to the whole world, WHY WON'T YOU JUST GIVE ME A CHANCE, JUST PICK ME AND I'LL SHOW YOU !!
Sighh.. I'm still so immature in certain aspects of my life. Just like the team captains of that very first Ballon Diamant game didn't know about my speed, all these other people out there don't know about my talents neither. Why? Because I simply haven't proved myself to them. I can't even blame them because given their position, I probably wouldn't pick myself neither.
So now, I need to prove myself. How do I go about that? Action action action.
This also applies to all you people reading my newsletter. You can certainly fool a few people by only talking or showing a bit of action, but there is nothing more definitive and real than having proof of your work.
If you want people to buy something then show them that it solves a real problem for them.
If you want to switch domains career-wise then put in the work to show that you can succeed in that new domain.
If you want people to listen to you then show them why they should listen to you.
If you want people to follow you then start to actually get some material out there and see if you're actually worth following or not.
I've been babying myself far too long and trying to justify my actions, but I hope that I'll take action now.
2020, let's get this vision by taking action.
boom boom brrap brrapp.
Aight that's it lol peace.
📌 Quotes for the soul :
JUST DO IT
The world can only be grasped by action, not by contemplation.
Partly done is better than well said.
You are what you do, not what you say you'll do.
Words may inspire, but only action creates change.
PEACE.
